Roaning vs Ticking

Somewhat Controversial Topic
with the ASC and other
Cocker Spaniel Breeders.

All we ask is that you read the
info and form a decision of
your own.
There are 2 commonly accepted beliefs about Roans and Ticking.  I
will try to illustrate here why I believe one to be the
correct way of
determining if a cocker spaniel is roan or just heavily ticked.
  1. Roaning is a result of a heavily ticked dog.
  2. Roaning is actually a set of different genes than that of ticking.

Up until we added Ribbons to our family I had almost just assumed
Scarlet was just closely related to a roan because of her heavy ticking.
She does in fact have a roan ancestor in her lineage.  I did not have a
visual example to show me the difference.  I will attempt to capture that
for you here with pictures up close and far away to show you the
difference.

Also having seen a litter of Roan Puppies born and develop right
before my eyes (see
Kattery's Weather Litter) and watching Thunder
go from appearing to be a parti pup to a overroaned juvenile has
shown me signs to look for.
Roaning is in fact present at birth tho often not as visible as it
could be unless you know what to look for.  Some breeders say it
can take up to 3 weeks before you see the roaning start to
develop tho that has not been my experience with it.

Ticking develops later as the puppy grows.  Freckles are
considered ticking tho to a lesser extent.  Freckles are often the
"spots" that appear on the faces and front legs of Parti Cockers
Scarlet is heavily ticked.
Ribbons is a roan.
Ticking on this parti pups face/nose.
Later on evident as "Freckles"
Roaning "smudge" on this parti pups face/nose.
