Sable Cocker Spaniels were once championed in the Show Ring for
Conformation but due to a rather controversial "political" decision are no
longer an allowed part of the Breed Standard for Acceptable Colors in the
actually highly sought after there.
It is hoped that in time the ASC will realize its mistake and re instate the
Sable as part of its Acceptable Color list... for now tho we are still allowed
to be registered as their true color.
A Sable cocker is tricky at times to describe but once you see one you will
know them by their distinct coloring.  It is often hard still however to tell
them at birth as the dark "sabling" appears to come in later and even
sometimes fades later in the dog's life.

Imagine a buff ASCOB (solid buff dog) that has a darker overcoat of hairs.
Most often the ears are very dark on the ends and the face looks as if its
and can have a base coat of many different shades too.  In fact there ought
to be a dozen pages devoted to just show Sable and its various shades.

Purrhaps the best website that I have come across with a nice explanation
and clear examples can be found
here.
There is less controversy on Sables according to some breeders because they were once
Championed, than on the Merles who have never been allowed to be Shown for Conformation.
However it is my opinion that there is less controversy over them merely because more of them
are  "show documented" and not hidden.

We have one sable dog here, Kattery's Lil Miss Muppet.  She is quite beautiful and the first girl
we owned.  Sables have a soft spot in my heart reserved just for them.

Hi, I am not trying to be a "snob" so please don't take this that way, however as someone with a vested interest in sable,
I would appreciate if you would consider changing your wording pertaining to the history of sables with the American
Spaniel Club.  Sables were not removed from the standard as your write up says.  Sables were never a part of the
standard.  Artistry kennels was the first person to realize she could get in the show ring with a sable parti color, as the
wording in the standard only said parti color was two or more well broken colors. So she took a sable parti in the ring
knowing this and knowing a judge could not disqualify and CH.Artistrys Soot N Cinders became the first American
Champion in sable/white.  This didn't pose an issue until later Polly Swanson pushed the envelope with solid sables. The
buff people did not want them, just as they initially did not want browns.  It became a personal heated issue.  So, then
the snobs at ASC said a new standard would have to be written to include the sable color.  Approval requires a 2/3
majority vote.  The majority of the members voted to approve the new standard that approved the new standard, but not
quite a full 2/3rds.  Many members did not get ballots, some people never filled out the ballots because they were so
confused as to what was going on.  Sables not being a part of the standard is due to a political and administrative
blunder.  Sables were never "removed" from the standard, they just have not been included.  Other countries continue
to show sables with no prejudice against them, because they know what occurred with the ASC was political and wrong.
In another 20 years, my generation will make up the majority of the ASC, and I've no doubt the standard will be changed
to address and include SABLE.   When it does, I'll be ready to walk in the rings with them and win.  I am fortunate to be
near the Canadian border and to have imported a very good quality sable parti that if allowed to show in the USA, could
blow the doors of any color dog!
Sincerely,
"E" name changed at the request of the sender.3/20
As illustrated above there is still "controversy" amongst those who appreciate Sables.  For
some reason some breeders feel its necesarry to squabble over the smallest of details and if
they do not get their way ~ well let's just say there are parts to the Dog Fancy that aren't quite so
nice.   No wonder its so hard for the ASC to sort out and settle any controversies.

Our Sable Solid (MissMuppet) is the proud momma to 2 beautiful sable girls (2 totally different
shades of sable but sable none the less) and 1 Sable Parti boy (who just happens to be a merle
as well!)
