Here are some good reasons NOT to breed a litter.
- There is a chance your female will not survive a pregnancy. Is she healthy enough?
- There is a chance your female might contract an STD from a breeding to an infected male.
- There is a chance your male or female might become hurt by the other dog when you try to breed them.
- There is an increase in Cancer Rates for unneutered intact males and females. Studies show that hormones such
as estrogen and testosterone can increase or speed up abnormal cell growth.
- Do you have the time and energy let alone resources to raise the puppies?
- There are alot of puppies/dogs that need homes, if you do not find homes for ALL your puppies can you
reasonably add them to your family?
- The "miracle of life" is just that, a miracle. Unfortunately things can and do go wrong. Can you reasonably be
prepared for the worst? Financially and Emotionally?
You shouldn't take breeding casually and I don't agree with the following reasons some people say they want a litter of puppies.
- Someone told me my female/male won't be happy if they never have a litter. *Dogs are happier not having them,
they'd rather have your undivided love and attention and never share you at all.*
- It's good for them to have puppies. *Nope, there is no evidence to support any benefit from having offspring, there
is however research that indicates it is NOT good for them to reproduce.*
- I want to make some easy money and selling the puppies will make me a profit. *If you do it the right way you will
be lucky to break even, if anything goes wrong you will lose money in multiples of hundreds of dollars.*
- My cousin/friend/whomever wants a puppy from my dog.*Have you tried referring them to your breeder so they can
have a relative?
- I want my child to understand about birth and the natural process. *Are you sure you are really wanting them to
understand all aspects of nature? Death is a big part of that and it can be part of the birth process as well.
