Let me begin by saying I do not believe all dogs and people are created equal when it comes to breeding. Health and emotional well being of both the dog and the owner is something that needs to be considered and examined closely before making the decision to do so. I am not encouraging anyone to breed, in fact I would discourage most people from doing it. I don't feel I am any better than you are because I have decided to breed some of my cocker spaniels. What I do believe is I was better prepared than most because I researched and had experience with working with animals and could be prepared to handle the unexpected and serious situations that can occur. The following pages are based on my experience and opinions. If/when you meet me you will find out I am not a judgemental individual and would never tell you what to do or how to live your life. That is your choice and I do truly feel so long as no one is being hurt (including dogs and puppies) and no laws are being broken than who am I to say what you do?
Placing Puppies/Finding Good Homes It isn't easy and there certainly isn't an exact formula. In America there are millions of unwanted puppies and dogs as well as other animals and I hate the thought of anyone contributing to the problem. If at all possible find homes (solid ones not just yea ok sure promises) before you breed and certainly start looking the moment they are born. If you are reading this page before breeding please re-read the cost involved information page. A novice having a litter will not have nearly as good a chance at placing all the puppies as a professional breeder who has set up a good network for finding good homes.
Friends and Family are often a good resource to try first as you know them and how well they will or won't treat a pet. Neighbors are also a good resource as you often know them better than a stranger and can check and see how the new puppy is doing. Your Veterinarian's Office often allows you to put up a notice of puppies needing homes on a bulletin board.
Advertising Do's & Dont's
- Please never advertise a puppy or any animal as "Free" because this attracts the type of individual who
either can't afford a puppy/dog and the care it will need thru out its life or the type of individual who has the wrong intentions from the beginning. Laboratories that do testing on animals often have a staff member whose only duty is to find free or low cost test subjects and they do this full time. Ask at least a small fee and you can determine after meeting the new "family" if you wish to give the pup/dog away for free.
- It is not advisable to make available your home phone number or address online for general safety
reasons. If at all possible the same should be said about placing an advertisement in the newspaper or in a flyer. Set up an email address with a free service like yahoo or hotmail etc. A post office box is also a good idea.
- Never include your children in the advertisements. It isn't safe as there ARE stalkers and children are
often targeted by predators. Don't use their names, try not to use their faces in images you post and discuss with your children some safety practices along the lines of stranger danger etc.
Advertising can be quite costly! Decide where your money is best spent before placing an advertisement. Consider where you found this website as a good place to begin. Professional Breeders (even a Hobby Breeder like myself) spend alot of money on advertising and some still do not find homes for all their puppies.
What to look for to determine if a potential home is a good home.
- Familiar with the Breed. People who have owned a cocker spaniel before often know what is involved and
will make a better home than someone who has never owned a cocker spaniel and had to pay a grooming bill.
- Where they live.
- If someone owns their home they are less likely to have to rehome the puppy later simply because
they do not have to have permission to have it.
- If they are in an apartment will the puppy/dog have ample access to exercise. The same applies to
whether or not they have a fenced in yard or a doggie door.
- Children in the household. Determine if you believe the children are old enough to play a role in taking
care of the puppy/dog and ask them what their feelings on it are. Someone buying a puppy for a 5 year old can not successfully think that the child will be able to be the primary care giver etc.
- Other pets in the household. If you have a puppy/dog that isn't easy going or has never been exposed to
other animals (such as cats, birds etc) than placing a puppy/dog in a home with these you at least need to be upfront about not knowing how the pup/dog will behave.
- What are their intentions for the puppy/dog. This is a good way to find out why they want the dog. Sure
someone can lie but if you do not ask them you do not give yourself the chance to learn.
- Breeding~ are you comfortable with them producing more puppies?
- Agility/Showing~ are you being fair with them about the quality of puppy/dog you are offering them?
Not all dogs are "show quality", misleading someone is not a good practice.
- Pet or Companion~ this is the most often answer in my experience.
