Let me begin by saying I do not believe all dogs and people are created equal when it comes to breeding. Health and emotional well being of both the dog and the owner is something that needs to be considered and examined closely before making the decision to do so. I am not encouraging anyone to breed, in fact I would discourage most people from doing it. I don't feel I am any better than you are because I have decided to breed some of my cocker spaniels. What I do believe is I was better prepared than most because I researched and had experience with working with animals and could be prepared to handle the unexpected and serious situations that can occur. The following pages are based on my experience and opinions. If/when you meet me you will find out I am not a judgemental individual and would never tell you what to do or how to live your life. That is your choice and I do truly feel so long as no one is being hurt (including dogs and puppies) and no laws are being broken than who am I to say what you do?
Finding a Sire/Dam *MORE LATER WHEN TIME IS AVAILABLE*
As discussed in previous pages (See Basic Health) you need to make sure the male/female potential mate is as healthy as your dog is and the healthier (more screening) the better. At minimum is a Brucellosis test to ensure your dog does not get that STD as it can cause sterility in the adult and kill the pups. Do not assume that a younger dog is healthy and not a carrier as they could have contracted it from their mother and be a carrier.
There is alot more involved with finding a suitable partner than you might think.
Conformation is important or your pups will be less desired by others.
- Color is part of conformation and the easiest to see. A solid and a parti should not be bred to one another as
it leads to mismarked puppies.
- Currently it is advised against breeding a Merle to another Merle~ health defects such as blindness and
deafness are claimed to be related to a "lethal" gene.
- You should evaluate a pedigree on a potential mate and look for things like color and health screening
information to be listed. Knowing the background behind each dog will helpt to give you a better idea of what your puppies might become.
- There are websites where you can look up any CERF or OFA testing results if any for a potential mate.
Resources for finding a sire/dam
- My first suggestion is that you contact the breeder of your own dog and discuss with them your intentions for
breeding your dog. They should be able to give you some insight as well as advice on what is behind your dog and desirable criteria to judge a potential mate with.
- Another suggestion is to contact a breeder in your area and start at least a dialog with them about your
intentions. Hopefully they too can give you some insight into breeding and they might even have a Stud or Dam to offer you. Fees and Agreements are usually involved and vary from situation to situation.
