| Let me begin by saying I do not believe all dogs and people are created equal when it comes to breeding. Health and emotional well being of both the dog and the owner is something that needs to be considered and examined closely before making the decision to do so. I am not encouraging anyone to breed, in fact I would discourage most people from doing it. I don't feel I am any better than you are because I have decided to breed some of my cocker spaniels. What I do believe is I was better prepared than most because I researched and had experience with working with animals and could be prepared to handle the unexpected and serious situations that can occur. The following pages are based on my experience and opinions. If/when you meet me you will find out I am not a judgemental individual and would never tell you what to do or how to live your life. That is your choice and I do truly feel so long as no one is being hurt (including dogs and puppies) and no laws are being broken than who am I to say what you do? Costs Involved These are just a general idea of what might be involved with a litter of puppies, I have NOT Provided prices because they vary so much from vet to vet. Do the research and find out before so you can make an informed decision. Price of your dog: Vet Exam Current Vaccines Brucellosis Test OFA Exam OFA evaluation CERF Exam CERF Registration Price of a Stud Dog or Stud Fee (make sure the stud has all the above) Ultrasound or X-ray to determine pregnancy Supplemental Diet while pregnant Whelping Box Newspapers/Towels for puppies to be on. Pricey PuppyPads are even nicer to have! Formula for Puppies Puppy Food Special Bowls for Pups Toys for Pups Puppy Shampoo Advertising for Pups to find homes (newspaper and online) AKC Registration for Litter (determined per pup) Initial Vaccines for Pups @ 6 weeks (exam and vacc per pup) Time to spend showing puppies to potential families or transporting them to new homes. Vaccines for pups at 9 weeks if not with new family Vaccines for pups at 12 weeks if not with new family (goes on and on) Just to give you an idea of the cost involved for me for an average size litter and normal delivery: (adding all the above up and assuming things go as planned) my last litter of 6 pups all placed with new families by 9 weeks of age cost me $2174(according to receipts). I sold 5 pups average cost $500 so earned $2500 made a "profit" of $326 if you do not count any of my time or labor costs. So NO there is no great money to be made with having a litter if you do it the right way. I also did not count the extras I provide like a puppy pack and microchipping etc. |
