Preparing for your new puppy/dog's arrival.
Whether this is your first pet or an addition to your furry family there
are a few things we'd like you to keep in mind and prepare for before
the new arrival arrives home!

PuppyProofing Your Home
  • Keep Household Chemicals such as cleaners out of their reach.
  • Store Breakable items safely out of harms way (especially til the puppy settles
    into the household routine)
  • Hide or cover electrical outlets and cords!  Teething puppies and dogs that are
nervous can seriously harm themselves by chewing on them... not to mention the
    damage to your home.
  • Keep kids' toys off the floor not just so they won't get destroyed by chewing but
also so that small parts aren't swallowed.
  • Use a cover and or protective fencing if you have a pool or hot tub.
Potential Hazards
  • Plants~ some are actually poisonous to dogs such as
  • Poinsettias, Azaleas, Rhododendrons, dumb cane, Japanese Yew,
    Oleander and English Ivy.
  • Chemicals~ common household items that your puppy could get into and
seriously get ill or die from.
  • Antifreeze, Engine Oil, Laundry Detergents, Household Cleaners, Lawn
Chemicals, even toilet sanitizing products (some are safer some aren't)

Where will he/she spend most of their time?
It is best to decide ahead or arrival where you will want your new dog/puppy to be most
of the time (See Housebreaking 101 for more details) and be prepared to meet their
needs there.  You need to consider the basics, Food, Water, Shelter/Safety, Toys &
Bedding.  We often recommend while adjusting a new member of the family to pick a
room that is easy to clean up first and slowly introduce them to more rooms in the
household as they "master" each room.
Items to have on hand.
Some items you may or may not have thought of that you should have ready to use.
  • Stainless-steel, non-tipping food and water bowls. (easiest to clean up, less likely
    to be chewed up)
  • A breakaway collar and leash.  (puppies get stuck on things with their collars it is
best to use a breakaway so that the worst possible scenario doesn't happen and
they get stuck and choke to death)
  • Bedding~ depending on your preferences it can be something fancy or
something simple.  However young puppies often need at least something to help
them maintain their body heat on a cold floor or crate.  We have beds that we
can toss into the washing machine easily as accidents happen (especially with
young pups).  We also use old towels during housebreaking for beds just for that
    reason!
  • An airline approved home and travel crate (large enough to transport your pup
as an adult so you only have to buy once).  This is one of the easiest ways to
keep your pet and home safe while you aren't around and help them with potty
    training.
  • A slicker brush so you can begin to teach your dog/pup about grooming, even if
you prefer to take your dog to a professional it is a good time to bond and
socialize with your pup by grooming it.
  • If you are going to groom/bath your dog @ home you need to find a good
shampoo (make sure to use a puppy shampoo if you have a puppy).
  • Cleanup Supplies, Have lots of PaperTowels & A good stain remover!
  • If you are getting a puppy it is a good idea to have lots and lots and lots of
newspaper for housebreaking!~Anything left over after they are trained can be
    recycled.
