Is a Cocker Spaniel the right dog for you
and your family?

Cocker Spaniels are wonderful dogs and it is
true they are certainly my favorite but they
aren't for everyone.  While they are one of the
more adaptable breeds in that they can live in
almost any kind of family they are not always
the right fit for everyone when choosing a dog.

The most important thing to consider when
deciding if a Cocker Spaniel is right for your
lifestyle is whether or not you have time for
your dog or puppy.  Cockers are very social
and need to be with you and given lots of love
and attention.  If you are the kind of household
that isn't home much or travels alot you need to
keep in mind that your Cocker Spaniel needs to
be taken care of not just fed and watered or
cleaned up after but emotionally as well.  They
don't mind if you work all day but when you
come home they feel entitled to lots of
attention from you and you will find they are
willing to do nearly everything you ask if you
just instruct them (takes time and patience tho)
on what you want.
Cockers are good pets and can be happy in almost any kind of
home or lifestyle.  They are extremely loving and thrive on your
attention.  They will form a tight bond with you or your entire
family whichever the case may be.  It doesn't matter to them if
you live in an apartment or have acreage for them to run on so
long as you give them plenty of love and exercise opportunities.

Raising a puppy is often a challenge for any new owner and the
key to being successful whatever the breed is Patience and
Repetition.  It takes time and patience on your part for the
puppy to begin to understand what you are teaching it be it
housebreaking or advanced tricks!  The more you put into the
situation the more you will get out of it, including love!

Some other things to consider about a Cocker Spaniel and
deciding if it is the right dog for you are:
  • Grooming~ if you keep your cocker in a longer length coat it needs
    to be brushed often.  If you keep your cocker in a shorter coat it will
    need haircuts more often.
  • They live 12-15 years on the average and are a lifelong commitment
    on your part.  Not only is there food and regular grooming but they
    do need yearly checkups and vaccinations at your veterinarian.
  • We also want to remind you that unless you spay or neuter your dog
    (which is something we strongly suggest for everyone) you will need
    to deal with your female going into heat every 6 months and possibly
    later in life developing Mammary Cancer (breast cancer) or
    developing a pyometra (infected uterus) which can be very costly to
    treat.  If you have a male you will have to deal with it wanting to find a
    female in the neighborhood if one goes into heat, potential
    aggression with other male dogs and later in life potentially testicular
    or prostate cancer (again both are avoidable if he is neutered
    younger) which is again costly to treat as well.  Not to mention the
    obvious that if you breed your dog you will inevitably need to deal
    with puppies or a myriad of other situations.

If you do choose to add a cocker to your family and feel it is the right
choice for you then we doubt you will ever regret that decision and feel
you probably will have made one of the best choices!  As the merryiest of
all breeds the cocker spaniel will bring you lots of joy and happiness in
the years to come!
