Toby was next on the table  to be groomed that night and he too was quite
calm about the whole thing.  In retrospect they probably were so weak that
they couldn't have resisted a haircut if they wanted to.  By this time I was
disheartened by humanity and emotionally exhausted from the lack of sleep as
well.  My heart ripped into a million pieces and was rebuilt instantly with a
minute gesture from Toby.  The compassion and understanding of a dog will
never be questioned by me nor will their amazing ability to comfort and
console.  Here he was at death's door and surely feeling miserable and he
reached out and comforted me with a lick to wipe away my tears.  I have never
been so humbled in all my life and it was in that moment that I truly could feel a
connection with God.  It should surprise no one that dog is God spelled
backwards.  It was truly a turning point in my life and a moment I will never
forget.  I even have chills retelling it today.  I vowed that I would never let
anything hold me down from loving life and helping others.  I promised Toby
that he would be ok and I would be certain the rest of his life would be well
spent.
night, LOL!  He was the first to show agression to any other
dog from this group of rescues and in fact had spent the night
in a big dog crate with his full brother Captain with no issues.
However trying to put Captain back in the crate with Toby that
next morning erupted a big dog fight.  On one hand it was a
good sign that they were feeling better but on the other hand it
meant we were going to have to deal with some socialization
issues that @ times were going to have us pulling our hair out.
Toby had a cherry eye right from his arrival here and other so
when a good friend of mine offered to take in one of the than
the obvious malnutrition he was by far the healthiest and
rescues to help out and give her kids a pet Toby was the
obvious candidate.  Sarah offered from day 1 to take him in, me
on the phone.  I give her alot of credit.. she has a heart as big
as mine when it comes to animals.  But that might be getting
ahead of myself with the story.
Needless to say the moment the behavior issues started
showing themselves we separated all 3 dogs.  It made for alot
more work for us as we now had to leash walk 2 of the rescues
(toby and prez) separate from any of the other dogs.  We were
advised to neuter them right away (yea an obvious one) but
had to wait nearly a month before their bodies would be able to
withstand anesthesia.  That was one of the longest months
ever and it surely tested our patience and love for dogs.  We
couldn't even walk two at a time and had to have all of our
dogs locked away to take one out.  If they saw one another
even thru the crate door they went at it like wild savages.
Captain was able instantly to be with our dogs and we don't
know if his lack of vision or his happy disposition kept him
from showing any agression but we were sure thankful for it.
Toby had his cherry eye fixed when he was neutered and
we seriously were hopeful that his aggression would
diminish with that as well.  I told Sarah that placing him
with her was out of the question until I knew for sure how
he would behave around children etc.  Toby needed a
forever home not to be removed once more if things didn't
work out and I would never allow a dog who might put a
child in danger be placed.
We began trying to socialize him with our dogs once it
should have been enough time for the testosterone to
have let his system.  We tried with our most patient and
well behave dog Sunshine but Toby would attack out of
fear and Sunshine wound up getting bit 3 times before we
gave that up that week.  Toby did get along with our cats
ourselves that he might never get over "puppymill stud
behavior", where in they fight for everything they need
and dont get along with other males.
I even told Sarah I wasn't sure if he was adoptable at one
point.  Terry wound up bit when breaking up a situation
between Toby and Sunshine and I could not see myself
adopting a family a dog that bit.  Weeks went by and we
from time to time would try Toby out on a leash with
another dog and each time he would lash out and we
would be discouraged all over again.
Then one night our local weather lady reported a twister
was headed right for Mound City and she advised
everyone to get to shelter immediately as it was on the
ground and moving this way.  Kansas is well known for its
Twisters but also this region of Kansas is reknown for its
rock.  We dont have a basement or a storm shelter and are
actually 7 miles from the nearest one.  We immediatey
loaded up all the dogs and kitties and in doing so had no
way to not put Toby in with 2 other dogs. (by this time
Prez and Captain were both fully integrated).  We wound
up missing the Tornado by 1/2 mile but even more
amazing than that was Toby was just fine with the other
dogs.  Not even a growl.  We don't know if he just knew he
had to behave as there was no other choice or if he finally
had come thru his testosterone and was ready to be a
good boy.  Either way we were damn thankful for it and
never looked back.
Toby was like a totally different dog after that night.  He
got along with nearly everyone of our dogs, he didn't
take being pushed around by anyone but didn't start
fights.  He LOVED being out in the yard, running in the
grass and there was more than one night when he
refused to come in so he could sleep out under the
stars and with the glorious spring we had we let him a
few times.  I would have said he became the purrfect
certainly ones that nearly died from starvation have a
tendency to compete over food and or overeat
whatever is in sight.  We have always free fed our dogs
whatever is in sight.  We have always free fed our dogs
and so Toby, Captain and Prez packed on a few extra
pounds.  Nothing his new home won't work out for him
as he will be the only dog and he will not feel the need
to eat everything in sight.

On May 17th 2007 after spending just 5 months nearly
to the day with us Sarah arrived to meet Toby for the
first time, spend the weekend getting to know him so
he could shift his trust from us to her and left to bring
him home to meet her 2 children May 21st.  I must
confess I cried like a baby when they pulled out of the
driveway but they were happy tears.  As I type this its
only 4 days later and I am still missing my lil "Tober" as
I called him.  Sarah called nightly with updates on him
and things are going quite well.  He met "his kids" and
instantly fell in love just as he did with Sarah when she
met him here.  He enjoys driving with them to and from
school every day and so far his biggest obstacle has
been her 2 cats who are less than thrilled to have a
dog for a brother.  They are coming around tho too
and time will tell but I keep telling Sarah one of these
days she will find Toby, Spot and Tyger (the 2 kitties)
curled up sleeping together.

Truly a happy beginning for a horrible situation!
Toby's story won't end here and you can in fact reach
his new family by sending email to

who are members of our
Happy Tails Trails discussion
Forum she is a member there as well.  His new family
has started a web page too to keep us in touch and up

Toby's Family has just finished their annual(2008) visit with us.
(They live 5 hours away so its hard to see them as often as we
might like!)  The difference in him now has brought tears to my
eyes and I couldn't feel better about the home he has found.
The bond between him and Sarah is stronger than ever
believed possible.  To watch Toby these days is to see him
being a true Cocker Spaniel~ his tail and body are always
wiggling with joy!  He plays!  He runs around as happy as can
be and his family is without a doubt HIS family~ he doesn't like
to see them leave the room without him even!  He is so well
behaved and settled (used to be a bit hyper/nervous natured)
that it's hard to believe the changes he's accomplished.
Above I mentioned that Toby had gotten "Chunky" in size
which we believed was due to his new obsession with food (if
it was available he ate it).  This visit Sarah gave Toby a "buzz
cut" for the summer weather (OKC gets even hotter than KS)
and you could see his actual toned muscles and a lean firm
body!  I couldn't be happier with the progress Sarah has made
with him!  Toby is a true success story and has renewed my
desire to find a more individual attention home for
Prez who
hasn't made that complete turn around that Toby has.  Sarah
tells me that Toby has inspired in her a love for Cocker
Spaniels and she is thinking of making an addition to her
family in the future so Toby will have a Cocker Playmate!
