CaptainRezQ Online to Kattery
Please read Captain's story all the way
thru, we realize its kinda long but it is a
story worth reading!
The first dog to be groomed was Captain whom on the way home we decided we would call CaptainRezQ so that people might stop and ask us about his unusual name and we could tell them his story and maybe educate others about puppy mills and animal rescue. In all the years I have worked in various veterinary hospitals and with animal rescues and shelters I have never seen one dog so covered in fleas. I took his coat down with a 10 blade and in one square inch the alone the fleas were so thick you couldn't count them but they clean the clipper blade about every 5 minutes. The first thing we cut off him tho were his ears as I could imagine it was very painful to look down all the time. Once we did we saw his eyes for the first time and realized how severe his cataracts were! Even someone who has no idea what a cataract was could see the white opacity in his eyes. Poor Captain wasn't even 2 years old yet and blind. He was so patient and sweet and well behaved for a dog that had never been clipped before. Terry opted to be the one to bathe him so I could go onto clipping another dog. 2 minutes into the bath Terry frantically called me to come find out where Captain was bleeding. It turned out he wasn't bleeding but the flea feces (which turns to blood color when it is wet) was so thick he did look like he was bleeding heavily.

I am not entirely sure what spurred the decision but we knew
from that night on that Captain was going to be spending the
rest of his life with us and we were going to do everything we
could to make up for the atrocious puppyhood he must have
had and try to give him what he was sorely missing. It is not to
say that we don't feel as strongly about the other 2 rescues but
because he will have special needs all his life, Captain belongs
right here with us forever.
Fortunately our other dogs feel the same way about Captain
staying here with us and there was never a moment when he
didn't fit in. Right from the start he was part of the "pack" and
even with our concerns about him being blind and needing to
use the dog door to go outside he showed us how life will be
lived. Captain amazingly enough trained our red and white male
Wigglez to lead him in and out of the doggie door to the dog
yard. He barks for Wigglez to come to him if he is wanting
outside or in and then follows him very closely up and down the
ramp that we put in so that Captain wouldn't have to use stairs.
The 2 of them are the best of buds and Wigglez never seems to
tire of helping him get around. Overtime Captain has learned the
something doesn't seem to bump into walls anymore.something
doesn't seem to bump into walls anymore.
Captain lives his life each day and is a true inspiration to me.
He never lets his limitations get in his way and has a happy go
lucky accepting outlook about life. If he knows he is blind and
is missing something he certainly never shows it. He is the
sweetest lil lover and is happiest leaning right up against you
snuggling and giving sweet gentle cocker kisses on your
cheek! We aren't sure if he gets up so close because he can
see you better that way or if he just likes the feel of another
heartbeat after being locked up alone so long. Either way we
never get enough of his snugglez.
cataracts were and the fact that they were possibly a result of
his severe neglect and not just poor genetics on the part of
his abuser/breeder. We wanted to try and restore Captain's
sight. We accepted the offers of help from those that knew of
Captain's story in the online forum where we first heard about
agreed to take in funds to help cover the cost of Captain
getting an evaluation and potentially cataract surgery and we
had a raffle and sold tickets to win one of 6 awesome rag
quilts Jane of BCP made.
http://www.betsyscockerplace.com/captainraffle.htm We wanted to raise
$3800 and wound up raising around $6500 and the remaining
funds went towards other rescued cockers BCP was involved
with.

June 5th's appointment revealed that the original
prognosis of retinal degeneration was due to a faulty
reading and we have since scheduled his surgery for
June 25th!
- June 24th, 2007, Captain arrives just before Midnite
at the specialists to have his surgery.
- June 25th, 2007, Captain undergoes a successful
cataract surgery and has both lenses implanted
without any problem.
- June 26th, 2007 9am, Captain has a recheck with
his Surgeon/Doctor and she reports everything is
fantastic! His pressures are ideal!
On April 30th 2007 Captain had his first visit with the
veterinary opthalmologist in Kansas City. He has his
2nd visit to reevaluate his ERG values June 5th. Initial
tests were promising but his ERG values also indicate
2nd visit to reevaluate his ERG values June 5th. Initial
the cataract surgery might wind up completely blind.
tests were promising but his ERG values also indicate
readings and give us an idea of how fast or slow his
retina degeneration is progressing and what amount of
retina degeneration is progressing and what amount of
time, if any, Captain might be able to see. We will keep
everyone informed as we go along with this.
Having Captain home and able to see was a dream come true for us and I want to re-thank us so
much about ourselves and the world around us. He could see from the moment he walked I called
him he leaped right for me and smothered me with his sweet kisses. He became fascinated with
the cats and was puzzled as to how they got up above him (on top of furniture etc) and would
jump up on his hind legs to verify what his eyes were telling him with his nose!
Captain detested his e-collar tho and were it not absolutely necessary for him to protect his eyes
with it I think I too would have taken it off since he bumped into me with it often! LOL He was a
good boy tho for his medications and eye ointments/drops which we had to do several times a
day. Sometimes poor Captain was frightened by what he was seeing and would howl in fear if
startled, we had to remember all of this was new to him and it had to be overwhelming at times. It
took about 2 weeks before he settled in with things and we allowed him back with all the other
dogs (kept him apart because of his sutures and how delicate they were). Once he rejoined his
friends tho he hasn't stopped living life @ full speed ahead!

Captain is now very active in playing with the other
dogs. He enjoys chasing the ball, playing fetch and in
another part of the yard or when we come home.
He is 2 but finally able to play like a puppy and is making
up for lost time! The change in him is remarkable but
overall he still has great spirit and it shows!
<--------There he is howling a Hello and TY to all who
helped him get his vision back!
Captain has had a recheck in November and all is well.
His surgery was a HUGE SUCCESS! Most of his vision
has been restored. His next follow-up will be summer of
2008.
