Kat's Garden Calendar
Informal record of the things I am noticing in
the yard as spring arrives and then summer.
April 19th.  Warm weather drops to cold and rainy weather.  No buds on the trees but the
neighbor's bright yellow forsyth bushes are blossoming.
April 21st.  Leaf buds are just starting to come in on the trees.  Hope the temperatures stay
warm enough that we don't frost.  Lots of rain so far.
April 24th no rain and was able to take pups out into the yard where the grass has changed
to green finally.  Roses have new leaves coming in, tho no flower buds as of yet.  Hydrangeas
are growing thru the winter straw and getting leaves.  Did lose 2 boxwood shrubs over the
winter (very small and a harsh winter!)
April 27th lawn had to be mowed!  Daffodils are in full bloom.  Stalks coming up on my irises
but no buds as of yet.  Planted 22 evergreens along the front of the road, mulched them in
and the rain has returned.  Also planted our 'hen and chicks' by the 'rock garden', planted the
hostas in the marigold bed and the front planting boxes have the annuals (petunias and
astilbe) and the perennial 'heucheras' are up and going well.  Our Peach tree has leaves!
April 30th.  Most of the trees now have green buds and a few have leaves already.  Pin Oak
tree by the front door has its 'pollen strings' more prominent than anything else.
May 3rd.  Arrived home after being gone over the weekend to see the daffodils and tulips are
'done'.  Also the trees all have leaves on them now.  Planted my upside down tomatoes ~
construction of the structure hardest part,  Need to devise way next year to not have them
hanging from the cross beam directly to the handle (too heavy to keep lifting).  1 Roma, 2
Yellow Pear, 2 Golden Harvest, 2 Cherry and 1 Strawberry plant.  Rain continues.  Received
my first bug bite.  Will treat the lawn when it stops pouring day after day.  No sign of fleas or
ticks in the yard or on the dogs tho so waiting shouldn't be too bad.

May 6th.  First Iris Bloomed.  Deep Dark Red ones ~ 4.  2 on east line 2 on front road line.
LOTS of purrple iris buds very close, within a week should all be open and stunning!
May 7th 2 yards of mulch hauled home, Terry is filling in the hole he made last month
removing those giant tree stumps we made about 3 years ago (trees damaged and too close
to the house for safety)  Decided with encouragement and promised assistance to do a rock
wall along the east border.  Will hopefully get Terry to start moving the large quantities of rock
we have in all shapes and sizes over that direction so we can complete it by Autumn.
May 8th Received almost 4 inches of rain in a loud thunderstorm sometime before dawn.
The upside down tomato plants structure gave out (newly dug holes filled with the water and
got weak but no plants were harmed despite my concerns they would have been.  Too wet to
do anything today but get those back up.
May 10th Most of the white irises have bloomed, some peach, some yellow, more of the
purple ones too.  We did lose after all one of the upside down tomato plants, not sure why but
it is shriveled and not looking well~ don't think it will recover.
Project I most want done: filling in the new planting bed on the other side of the driveway
with manure and dirt and then planting my gladiolas and other bulbs before it gets too much
further into the warm season.
May 11th hauled 5000 lbs of manure and humus home (right rear tire on pickup needs
repair) for the driveway bed.  Was able to get 2/3 of it on the ground before the rain hit ~ 2
more inches.
May 12th after returning home from shopping in Louisburg (added KungFu and Tai Chi to the
family) we finished the bed on the side of the driveway and tilled it in with the new tiller.
Works great!  Another deluge of rain (3 inches this time) and so have not put the bulbs in yet.
May 13th still to wet to plant, received in the evening another 3 inches if not more of rain.
May 14th~ SUNSHINE! YAY~ but still too wet so far today to put bulbs in.  Will cover with
mulch once done tho.  More rain predicted for tomorrow and the weekend.
May 16th we finally got the bulbs in along the new driveway beds.  Took only about an hour
and while I had thought we'd have more than enough bulbs to fill the area it appears we only
got about 1/2 set up.  Going to wait and see tho for the remaining area.. its going to be right
next to where the garage goes in this summer and rather than stress about the workers
trampling anything I think I will just let the soil 'sit' til next year.
May 18th Our first rose bud has appeared!  The knockout roses have buds! Mowed the lawn
again today.  Terry has picked the rock up from the area along the road and the west side of
the house.
May 19th Our first rose "Tropicana" has bloomed~ 3 buds and one partially opened.  This is
the one that is vine like and we are training to grow around the lamp in the center of the front
yard.
May 20th~ Still experiencing sunshine! YAY!  The hostas are growing quite well.  Irises are all
in bloom and will soon be 'spent'.
We are currently working indoors demolishing and then reinstalling the lower kitchen
cabinets.
